Mic Heynekamp began brewing in 1991 as an underage university student pursuing his geology degree. Fast forward to 1996 when finalizing his graduate degree he came to the realization that working for Exxon was not of any interest and would rather open a brewpup in a small mountain town with his partner Molley who had an accounting degree for the intention of opening a restaurant. In 1999 Socorro Springs Brewing Co opened using a 1000L self-built brewery serving both Ales and Lagers with wood-fired pizzas. 10 years later through multiple expansions Eddyline was opened in Buena Vista, Colorado and in 2011 began canning their beers. Multiple medals including a World Beer cup Silver, A Great American Beer Fest Gold and a North American Beer Competition Gold caused demand for their beers to soar and despite plans to move to New Zealand being in the works they continued to grow Eddyline which produced 2 million litres in 2018. Eddyline in New Zealand opened in early 2016 and has just begun canning their beers for NZ distribution.
Throughout the breweries’ growth learning as much as possible about all things that can influence beer has been critical. The two biggest variables that are the most challenging to properly assess and influence have been water chemistry and yeast vitality. Water chemistry has one of the biggest influences on a beers character and can easily be altered IF an accurate water chemistry is available. Mic will discuss his tools for easy and affordable water testing. Yeast vitality and proper yeast pitching are essential for good ferments and Mic will also discuss his tools to quickly and easily perform yeast counts and discuss ways to manage yeast efficiently.

After school in Edinburgh I graduated from Heriot-Watt University in 1983 with a brewing degree, joining James Shipstone & Sons, Nottingham as an Assistant Brewer. I was with them four years then joined Ruddles Brewery in Rutland, qualifying as Master Brewer in 1991 with the Institute of Brewing & Distilling. I left them in 1997, the same year I got married, joining Carlsberg Breweries in Copenhagen, Denmark where our twin sons were born in 1998. I brewed around the Carlsberg world, mainly Asia and Europe. My final posting with them in 2004 was to Carlsberg Tetley Brewery in Leeds before leaving in 2006 just before the brewery shut.
I joined Murphy & Son Ltd., Nottingham in 2007 and immediately set about building up their Export business using my international contacts at the time. I’m still working for them covering the north of England, Scotland & certain export markets.
I live near the city of Ripon, North Yorkshire with my wife Alex and divide my time spare time between fly fishing the Yorkshire Dales and beekeeping, a hobby I have followed for 26 years.
